I know, girl. Getting those Air Jordan's out of the Foot Locker was just flat out survival. I hunkered down and rode out the storm - this time me and others. Have never failed to plan so poorly I needed shoes and TV's from Wal-Mart.
I love the people keep bringing up the shoe store on this feed… When she clearly acknowledges that there is selfish looting going on. That was never her argument. Never in this whole piece does she say that everyone who takes something without paying for it after an emergency is doing it for the right reasons. What she is saying is that all too often there's often an automatic assumption that people of color are doing it for all the wrong reasons, and that White people only do it for the right reasons, which is facilitated by the way the media portrays it.
I don't think looting a foot locker for twelve pairs of gym shoes is a need. Stripping two entire stores of all their shoes? Please ! I'm not buying it. Looting is wrong. If you must leave a note and phone number and promise to repay for whatever you felt the need to take without permission. But you never steal! Never!
I've never been through what so many people have in the last week, and cannot imagine what is going through their minds. The problem is though, that some of the young people, seen on camera stealing shoes from a business, also didn't seem to get what was going through the minds of so many people that were going through the exact same thing. I'm hoping that if they ever go through another disaster, like a hurricane, that they at least remember not to steal, and what being in jail is like and choose not to do it again.
a few people stole shoes and suddenly that is the focus of hwta going on after a catastrophe ... why not focus on the fact that there are many people who are starving and struggling period!
To be fair....they were stealing jordans. That's not survival. That is robbery. I am a liberal but cannot defend that. If they were taking food and water I would habe a different reaction.
Some people did have no choice and were forced to stay where they were, I assume, in both Harvey and Irma. BUT, when Sandy hit us up here in the north, I made sure I had enough non perishable stuff to eat-and kept bread in the freezer ready to be taken out when the power went out-when we could, we cooked all the meat in that freezer on the grill and put it in the coolers we had filled with ice. And we put two BIG ones on our second floor! We even bought a few ahead of time! And we went to the ATM and got cash to have on hand! We did not have to evacuate and the shelters were pretty full. I guess what I am saying is that unless a storm is unpredicted or there is simply no forwarning, or you just cannot find a way to prepare or get out, then you must be sensible enough to do your due diligence and get ready. We were without power, water, stove and phone for 10 days after Sandy. And it got pretty darned cold over that time too-and no heat. And, I will just mention that NOW, we own two generators. I say again, prepare if you can-but I am aware not everyone can do that.
This country was and is built on stealing. It does not make it right but it is never a good idea to try and get a splinter out of someone's eye when you have a beam in your own.
Is it wrong yes but how wrong hmm.First thought was stealing is low down but I have family in Florida and they are all out of work and missing even more after. Bills will still come in for them rent is still due and all new food will have to bought. Most of us working class live paycheck to paycheck so an opportunity arises to make a little money off of stores insurance especially stores and products who up charge by around 80% . eating and paying bills after is still surviving. Not like they are robbing houses. maybe it's just the Robin Hood in me.
First one must believe that stealing is wrong. Society has taught us that right is wrong and the praises from our peers are paramount. All advertisements hs emphasized "something free"...a subtle message meaning ...be proud of geting something free.
